Rehoboth Beach Walk to Defeat ALS

Rehoboth Beach Walk to Defeat ALS

Thanks to all the recent ALS ice bucket challenges taking over your Facebook news feed, by now you should be very well aware of this terrible disease. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It leads to the loss of control of muscle movement, total paralysis and death within two to five years of diagnosis.

If you aren’t too keen to dump a bucket of freezing cold ice water on your head, fear not, you can still support the cause in a less hypothermic way. Just lace up your kicks and participate in the 7th Annual Rehoboth Beach Walk to Defeat ALS® this Saturday, September 13. The walk is an easy two miles on the boardwalk and begins at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand at 9:30 a.m. Registration is at 8 a.m.

Walkers of all ages and fitness levels are welcome and both individuals and teams are encouraged to participate. While there is no fee to take part in the event, there is a suggested contribution of $25. Money raised goes to patient services, research, and advocacy and awareness. Volunteer opportunities are also available. Check out the website for more information, to register, or to make a donation.

Take the Chicken Plunge!

Chicken Plunge

Most of you are familiar with Rehoboth Beach’s annual Polar Plunge - a winter event that involves jumping into the freezing ocean for a good cause. But for those who are too ‘chicken’ to launch into icy water, there is an alternative.

The Chicken Plunge is a family-friendly activity for those who prefer to dip in when the ocean temperature is comfortable. Participants can either jump in the ocean or a baby pool. Community teams are encouraged to participate.

The event, which benefits the Rehoboth Beach Patrol (RBP) and the Village Improvement Association (VIA), takes place this Saturday, September 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the VIA Clubhouse on Grenoble Place at the north end of the boardwalk near the Henlopen Hotel. Plunge time is at 1 p.m. The cost is $10 per adult and $5 per child (accompanied by a participation adult).

RBP lifeguards will be on hand to help out as well as the Rehoboth Beach Fire Department - complete with fire truck! There will be a costume contest in addition to food, fun, games and prizes!

As a result of last year’s event the RBP was able to purchase new defibrillation equipment. The event also benefits VIA’s outreach to local charities and scholarship funds. VIA promotes the interests, improvements and progress of Rehoboth Beach as well as perform charitable and civic work.

The rain date for this event is Sunday, September 7.

41st Annual Outdoor Fine Art & Fine Craft Show

Fine Art & Fine Craft Show

Over 130 artists and artisans from the Mid-Atlantic region will display and sell their fine art and fine crafts at the 41st Annual Outdoor Art Show on August 9 & 10 and August 16 & 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m (Saturdays) and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m (Sundays). The event will take place at Rehoboth Art League’s 3.5-acre historic wooded grounds located in Henlopen Acres.

Started in 1973 by the art community as a way to add new events during the summer, artists set up their work along fences and welcomed the public. It was an instant success and soon became the most anticipated summer art event in the area.

While most of this year’s artists will be set up in white tents, some will display their work along snow fences, adding a touch of the show’s history. As this is a juried event, you can be assured that the work featured will be exceptional.

Aside from being an art show it’s also a fun family event featuring great food (prepared by Nage and The Point), music, face-painting, artist demonstrations, and art exhibits in the galleries. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the campus and follow it up with a refreshing glass of lemonade outside the Children’s Studio (for the little kids) or a cold one at the Dogfish Head Biergarten (for the big kids).

The entrance fee is $5 per adult per weekend. Kids under 12 enter for free. Click here for complete details and to purchase tickets.
